I just thought that this warranted a little food education this evening. As most of you know I am a frequent bargain shopper and I love Aldi for groceries because I get good deals there and they have a lot of gluten free and organic products now.
Well, just because something is LABELED as "healthy" does not mean it really is! I hear people talk about how they only buy organic, fat free, blah, blah, blah. While gluten free is good and so is low fat often time manufactures add other, WORSE things in place of the things they take out.
I am going to use this as a prime example. Two different tomato sauces from the same store. You would think that the "Fit & Active" would be the healthier choice because that is obviously how it is marketed.
Now let's discuss....
I actually opened a can of the "Fit & Active" version to add to what I was making for dinner and happened to look at the label. It make be gluten-free, cholesterol free (it is tomatoes... it better be), low sodium, etc. BUT, it contains HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP!!! What? Needless to say it immediately went in the trash. the fact that it only contains 10mg of sodium was most likely why I bought it. I will admit it had me fooled. But, having the added high fructose corn syrup is a HUGE no no.
So, lets look at the other... most of the macro nutrients are very similar, except for sodium. The regular version contains 280mg per serving.. While this is kind of high compared to what I would prefer, Since everything we consume is relatively low sodium the added from this one ingredient is no big deal.
So, moral of the story: READ THE LABEL!!!! Just because something says it is the "healthier" option does not mean it really is. Be aware of the ingredients, not just what selling points the front says.
